There’s something pretty encouraging happening on Northey Avenue in North Red Deer.
If you’ve driven past the former Unity Baptist Church site recently, you’ve probably noticed the construction underway. Hope Mission is building a 21,845-square-foot community centre designed to provide programs and support for children, youth and families in our community. The City of Red Deer lists the project at approximately $6.2 million, with construction underway and completion expected in spring 2027.
And I think this is something worth celebrating.
The new centre will include spaces such as a gymnasium, kitchen and community areas, providing a permanent home for prevention and support programs that Hope Mission already delivers in Red Deer. The programs are expected to be offered free of charge.
What I like most about this project is the idea behind it: helping people before they reach a crisis.
Giving kids somewhere to go.
Giving families support.
Providing meals, mentorship and positive activities.
Creating a place where people can connect and feel part of their community.
That’s the kind of investment that goes beyond bricks and mortar.
It’s also a great example of different organizations working together. Unity Baptist Church is currently meeting downtown while construction takes place and plans to return to the Northey Avenue location once the new facility is completed.
North Red Deer is growing, and projects like this help make a community about more than just houses, roads and businesses.
It’s about people.
I’m looking forward to watching this building take shape and seeing the positive impact it can have on children, families and the entire North Red Deer community. This is not about religion, this is not about immigration this is about an organization in Red Deer giving hope and a plan for their futures to our citizens
Sometimes the best things being built in a neighbourhood aren’t just buildings.
They’re opportunities, connections and hope.
